I remember reading in theologian Emil Brunner’s writings this forceful statement: “A church exists by mission as a fire exists by burning.” Mission comes from the Latin word that means “to send out.” Indeed, the Greek word that we translate as “church” in the New Testament, ekklesia, means “those who are called out.”: called out of their normal existence, as those fisherman were when Jesus passed by on the shore of Galilee.
To be sent on a mission, in the church’s case proclaiming the Kingdom of God, means being a servant, “a light to the nations.”
In 2008 may Peace Presbyterian be a missional church.
